Chimney Obstruction and Animal Removal in Chicago

How to Tell Your Chimney Is Blocked

The signs fall into two groups. Sounds and smells point to animals: scratching, scrabbling, or fluttering inside the wall or the firebox, chirping that gets louder at dawn and dusk, a strong musty or ammonia odor, or flies appearing around the fireplace out of season.

Performance and safety symptoms point to a blockage of any kind: smoke rolling back into the room when you light a fire, a fireplace that used to draw and no longer does, soot or debris falling into the firebox, a furnace or water heater that keeps shutting down or will not stay lit, condensation on windows near the appliance, and a carbon monoxide alarm sounding.

If a CO alarm has gone off, leave the house and call the fire department first. Do not use the appliance again until the flue has been checked.

What Gets Stuck in Chimneys

Birds are the most common. Chimney swifts nest in flues by preference and are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which means their nests cannot legally be removed while they are occupied. That is a real constraint and one reason we push people to cap flues in late winter, before nesting season starts, rather than in June when nothing can be done.

Squirrels get in and frequently cannot get back out, because a smooth flue is easy to fall down and impossible to climb. Raccoons are the opposite problem: a female raccoon will deliberately enter a flue as a den site, and she is capable of tearing through a poorly secured damper into the house. Starlings build bulky nests that block flues completely.

Not everything blocking a flue is alive. We regularly find collapsed clay tile, fallen brick and mortar from a deteriorating chimney, leaves and branches, construction debris, and, on chimneys that have not been swept in years, creosote glazed thick enough to close the flue down on its own.

How We Clear a Blocked Chimney

We start with a camera. A video scan tells us what is in the flue, where it sits, and whether the flue itself is damaged, and it keeps us from working blind. From there the method depends on what we find: mechanical removal with rods and specialized tools from above or below, careful removal of nesting material, or in the case of heavy glazed creosote, rotary methods designed for that deposit.

For live animals we work with humane removal practices and, where the situation calls for it, coordinate with licensed wildlife control. Once the flue is clear we sweep it, re-scan to confirm the full length is open, check draft, and inspect the damper and smoke chamber for damage the animal or the debris caused. Nesting material is combustible and often soaked with droppings, so we clean the smoke shelf thoroughly rather than just opening a path.

Then Cap It, or It Happens Again

Clearing a flue without capping it is a temporary fix. An open flue is a sheltered, insulated vertical shaft, which is precisely what these animals are looking for, and word gets around: the same chimney gets re-occupied season after season.

A stainless steel cap with properly sized mesh closes it off permanently and runs about $350 installed for a masonry or utility cap. Mesh sizing matters — too coarse lets animals and embers through, too fine clogs with soot and chokes the draft — so we size it to the appliance and fuel. The cap also keeps rain out of the flue, which is the other reason to do it.

Health and Safety Beyond the Blockage

Two things deserve mention. Carbon monoxide is the immediate danger from a blocked flue: colorless, odorless, and produced by every fuel-burning appliance in the house. Working CO detectors on every level are not optional, and symptoms that improve when you leave the house should be treated as a warning.

The second is what animals leave behind. Droppings that accumulate in a flue or on a smoke shelf can host histoplasmosis, and bird nests carry mites that migrate indoors once the birds are gone. This is not work to do yourself with a shop vacuum.

Damper, Smoke Chamber, and Follow-Up Repairs

Animals and debris often damage more than they block. Raccoons pull dampers loose. Nesting material and moisture rust damper plates until they seize. Falling tile chips the smoke shelf and the firebox. After clearing a flue we inspect all of it and tell you what needs attention, whether that is a damper replacement, smoke chamber parging, or a liner if the scan shows cracked tile.

Timing: Cap Before Spring

Nesting season runs roughly March through August in northern Illinois. Once birds are nesting in a flue, protected species cannot be removed and you wait them out. The practical implication is that late winter is the best time to have a flue cleared and capped, and fall is the second best.
