Why dryer vents matter more than people think
A dryer moves a remarkable volume of hot, wet, lint-laden air out of your house every time it runs. When the duct that carries that air narrows with lint, three things happen at once: drying takes longer, the appliance runs hotter, and the trapped lint sits against the heat. Lint is excellent kindling. This is why failure to clean the vent is consistently identified as the leading factor in clothes dryer fires, and why the job is not the optional extra it looks like.
Signs your vent is blocked
Clothes that need two cycles. A dryer that is hot to the touch, or a laundry room that feels like a sauna. A burning smell, or a musty one. Lint collecting around the door seal or on the floor behind the machine. An outside vent flap that stays shut while the dryer is running. Any of these on their own is worth a look; two together and you should stop using the dryer until it is checked.
How we clean a dryer vent
We disconnect the machine, then work the full duct run with rotating brushes driven from the appliance end, the exterior end, or both, with a vacuum capturing what comes loose. We check the termination flap actually opens and closes, confirm airflow at the outlet once the duct is clear, and reconnect and test the dryer before we leave. Where the duct is foil flex, crushed, or run further than it should be, we will say so – some ducts do not need cleaning so much as replacing.
Repairs, rerouting and bad installations
A surprising number of the vents we open have never had a chance. Flexible foil duct that sags and traps lint at every low point. Runs of thirty feet with four elbows. Terminations into a soffit or an attic instead of outdoors. Screws driven through the duct wall, which snag lint like a comb. Cleaning these buys a few months. Fixing them solves the problem, and we handle both.
Roof terminations and long runs
Plenty of North Shore homes vent through the roof, especially where the laundry sits on an upper floor. Those runs are longer, harder to reach, and far more likely to be neglected, because a homeowner with a brush kit is not going to climb up there and should not try. We are on roofs every day for chimney work, so this is routine.
