Why we love Mason-Lite
Real masonry where real masonry won’t fit
A hand-built masonry fireplace is heavy enough to need its own foundation. That rules it out for most additions, most upper floors, and most patios. Mason-Lite’s pre-cast modular firebox is roughly 50% lighter than the hand-built equivalent, which puts a true masonry fireplace back on the table in places it otherwise couldn’t go.
We are masons. We build hand-laid fireboxes. We still specify Mason-Lite regularly, because it solves a structural problem that craftsmanship alone can’t.
The firebox goes together fast — and the rest is ours
The manufacturer’s firebox assembly is measured in hours, not days. That doesn’t make the project fast; it moves the crew’s time to where it actually matters — the surround, the hearth, the chase, the termination, the flashing. The parts that determine whether the fireplace looks right and stays dry.
It’s built for outdoors
Outdoor fireplace kits, fire features, and wood-fired pizza ovens. North Shore outdoor living projects have gotten serious, and Mason-Lite is one of the few systems that handles an exposed installation properly rather than being an indoor product placed outside.
Made in the USA, and they mean it about installation
100% USA sourced and manufactured, out of Riverside, California, since 2005. Mason-Lite also states plainly that their fireplaces should be installed by a technician trained in Mason-Lite’s procedures — which we appreciate, because the failure modes on modular masonry are all installation failure modes, not product failure modes.

Mason-Lite is the right call when…
- You’re adding a fireplace to a house that was never framed or footed for one
- The fireplace is going on an upper floor
- You want an outdoor fireplace or pizza oven on a patio or deck
- You want traditional masonry depth and mass, not a metal firebox with a facade
- You want to burn wood in a real masonry firebox
- Budget matters and hand-built masonry doesn’t fit it
If your design calls for a viewing configuration or dimension that no modular system offers, Acucraft is where we’d go instead.
Installing a Mason-Lite on the North Shore
Structure still gets verified. Lighter than hand-built is not weightless. On an upper floor, a deck, or an existing slab, we confirm the assembly can carry the firebox, the chimney, and the finished surround before anything is ordered. This is the step that gets skipped by people who read “lightweight” and stop reading.
The chimney above it is the whole game. A Mason-Lite firebox is only as good as what sits on top of it. Termination height above the roofline, proper crown or cap detailing, flashing at the roof penetration, and a chase built to shed water. These are the exact failure points we get called to repair on other people’s installations, and they’re the part of the job our masons are built for.
Outdoor installations take a beating here. A North Shore outdoor fireplace runs through freeze-thaw cycles, wind off the lake, and driving rain. Water management — cap, crown, flashing, drainage — matters more outdoors than in, and it’s where outdoor fireplaces fail. We detail them accordingly.
Vent-free deserves a real conversation. Mason-Lite offers vent-free systems, and they’re appropriate in specific situations and inappropriate in others. Some jurisdictions restrict them. We’ll give you an actual recommendation rather than handing you a spec sheet.
Permits. North Shore villages vary in how they handle fireplace and chimney permits. We pull them and coordinate inspections.

Common questions
Is Chimney Monkey an authorized Mason-Lite dealer?
Yes. Chimney Monkey is an authorized Mason-Lite dealer and installer for Chicago’s North Shore. We build Mason-Lite modular masonry fireplaces, outdoor fireplace kits, and pizza ovens in Lake Forest, Winnetka, Glenview, Northbrook, Deerfield, and Highland Park — handling structural verification, firebox assembly, chimney, and finish masonry.
Is a Mason-Lite a real masonry fireplace?
Yes. Mason-Lite fireboxes are pre-cast masonry components assembled on site, giving you masonry mass and depth rather than a steel firebox behind a decorative facade. The difference from hand-built masonry is that the components are manufactured to consistent dimensions and weigh substantially less.
Can a Mason-Lite go on a second floor or a deck?
Often, yes — that’s one of its main advantages. Being roughly half the weight of hand-built masonry opens up locations that couldn’t otherwise carry a fireplace. We still verify the structure can carry the full assembled load, including the chimney and finished surround, before proceeding.
Can I burn wood in a Mason-Lite fireplace?
Yes, in the wood-burning configurations. Gas burner systems are also available. Which one is right depends on how you’ll use the fireplace and on the venting available at the location — we’ll walk through both during the site visit.
How long does a Mason-Lite installation take?
The firebox itself assembles in about two hours per the manufacturer. The overall project takes considerably longer, because the chimney system, chase, surround, hearth, and finish masonry are the bulk of the work. We give you a real schedule after the site visit, not a brochure number.
Mason-Lite or a hand-built masonry fireplace?
Hand-built makes sense when the design demands something no modular system produces and the structure can carry it. Mason-Lite makes sense when you want masonry mass with less weight, a shorter schedule, and lower cost. We build both, so we have no reason to push you toward either one.
