Elk Grove Village is a northwest suburb of Chicago, located right next to O’hare International Airport. It is considered a principal village in the Chicago metropolitan area because of its huge industrial park. The population in Elk Grove Village is over 33,000 and is an attractive place to live for its residents. Just like the name suggests, Elk Grove Village is home to a small herd of Elk, which are kept in a grove in The Ned Brown Forest Preserve. Elk are actually not native to the area, but were brought here by an early resident named William Busse, in the 1920’s from Montana by train.
The Ned Brown Forest Preserve, also known as Busse Woods, is a major attraction in Elk Grove Village. There is so much land and water to be explored that a quick stop can turn into a whole day of exploration! The Ned Brown Forest Preserve consists of a whopping 3558 acres and 10.8 miles of trail. It includes a huge body of water, called Busse Lake, which is open to canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats. You can even fish year round there. There is also an eight-mile paved trail, called The Busse Forest Paved Trail, which is perfect for biking and rollerblading. It winds through breathtaking sunny meadows, right along the lakeshore of Busse Lake. In the winter, visitors can cross-country ski there.
