I have birds in my chimney. Can a chimney sweep remove them for me? They are very noisy.
Unfortunately, we cannot remove them. These birds are likely chimney swifts, which are known to nest in chimneys. Chimney swifts are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which means they cannot be disturbed while nesting.
Here’s what you can do:
Wait for Migration: Chimney swifts are migratory birds, typically staying in one place for a few weeks during their nesting season. It’s best to wait 2-3 weeks for them to leave on their own. They usually migrate south for the winter, vacating your chimney naturally.
After They Leave: Once the birds have migrated, it’s the perfect time to address any chimney issues. Call a professional chimney sweep to thoroughly clean and inspect your chimney. This will ensure that any debris from the birds’ nests is removed, preventing future blockages or fire hazards.
Prevent Future Nesting: To prevent chimney swifts from nesting in your chimney again, have a chimney cap installed. A properly fitted chimney cap will keep out birds, debris, and other animals while allowing smoke to exit safely.
Legal and Ethical Considerations: Remember that disturbing or attempting to remove the birds while they are nesting can result in legal repercussions due to their protected status. It’s crucial to follow the guidelines and wait until they have left on their own.
