Fireplace and Chimney Cleaning in Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights is one of the largest suburbs we work in and one of the most varied, which means a sweep here is rarely a routine visit. The village grew enormously between the mid-1950s and the early 1970s, so the bulk of the housing stock is ranches, split-levels, and Georgians of that era, most with a single masonry fireplace and a clay tile flue that is now sixty or seventy years old. Around the downtown Metra station there is a much newer layer of condominiums and townhomes, and those overwhelmingly have prefabricated metal fireplaces with framed chases rather than brick.
What We Find in Arlington Heights Chimneys
Two patterns dominate. On the post-war masonry chimneys, the clay tile has usually seen decades of a high-efficiency furnace venting into a flue that was sized for a much larger appliance, and the acidic condensate that produces has eaten the mortar joints between the tiles. We also see a lot of thin mortar-wash crowns from that building era, flush with the brick and with no overhang, which is why so many Arlington Heights chimneys have spalled brick in the top three or four courses.
On the newer townhome and condo chases, the problem is almost always the galvanized chase cover. Builder-grade galvanized pans installed in the 1990s and 2000s are now at the end of their service life, rusting through at the low point and running water straight down inside the chase. Signs Your Chimney Needs Attention
Smoke rolling back into the room, a fireplace that draws worse than it used to, a persistent smoky or sour smell in warm weather, debris or sandy mortar collecting in the firebox, white staining on the exterior brick, rust on the damper or the appliance vent connector, and scratching or chirping sounds in the flue. Any one of those is worth a look. A carbon monoxide alarm sounding is a leave-the-house-and-call-the-fire-department event, not a scheduling one.
